FORT MADISON -  On May 11  rail enthusiasts will celebrate  National Train Day at the Historic Santa Fe Depot in Fort Madison! As a tribute to the rich railway history, a special fundraiser will be held for the Fort Madison Tourism Bureau.
Fort Madison's significance as a rail hub dates back to the late 19th century, marked by the construction of the Santa Fe Railway bridge over the Mississippi River in 1888 and the iconic Santa Fe Depot in 1910. The Depot's distinctive architecture, featuring a long, low structure punctuated by a majestic central tower, serves as the backdrop for the event.
At 8 am, the fundraiser commences with a unique ascent as Chi Eastin, the Fort Madison Tourism Director, is lifted into the tower in collaboration with the Fort Madison Fire Department, ensuring access to this iconic location. For the next 12 hours, Chi will engage in hourly challenges, broadcasting live on Facebook and interacting with viewers on Virtual Railfan's YouTube page to raise funds.
You can support the cause by making donations through our website and Facebook via PayPal. Proceeds from this event will contribute to various tourism initiatives and the creation of the Festivals & Cultural Events Support Fund, set to launch in 2025.
This program aims to bolster events that capture the authentic charm and warm hospitality that define Fort Madison, benefiting both residents of Lee County and visitors alike.
