Vote today! Election on for new elementary school

Election day is here and voters will decide today whether or not to allow the Fort Madison Community School District to bond for $27 million and build a new elementary school.

Fort Madison Community School District Superintendent Erin Slater said she is excited this morning.

"I'm really excited to hear from the community today on our proposition to pass the referendum vote," she said.

"I'm very hopeful the community will support the next educational steps for our PreK-3rd grade students.

Polls are open today from noon to 8 p.m. Fort Madison voters will cast their ballots at the Fort Madison Public Library. The West Point Public Library and the Grace Bible Church are also venues for district residents in those areas.

If the ballot is approved the new building will replace the current Lincoln and Elementary schools with a state-of-the-art facility that, according to school offcials, will help alleviate preK-3 capacity issues district wide as well as provide contemporary learning spaces.

The monthly impact to a homeowner with a $75,000 assessed valuation home would be $2.64/month, according to information released by the school.
