Local church Community Creche on display Sunday

PEN CITY CURRENT -

FORT MADISON - The Union Presbyterian Church will have its Community Creche available again this weekend. Last Sunday's quick snow storm hindered turnout but the hall is currently full of a variety of nativity scenes.

Kathy Skewes, an organizer of the event, said nativities are part of a compilation of collections spanning more than 20 years and from all over the state.

"The ladies and I were trying to figure out how long we've been doing this and we couldn't really come up with a date, but I would say more than 20 years," Skewes said.

The ornaments range in material from plastic, wood and glass, and adorn ornately decorated tables throughout the church's fellowship hall. More than 15 tables have scenes from the birth of Christ.

Skewes said she remembers visiting with family in Fort Dodge and thought the idea of bringing it to FM was a good one. Now traveling with her husband, Tom, collecting and bringing nativities to the creche is part of the whole vacation process.

"It used to be just me, but now he's the one pointing out where the Christmas stores are," Skewes said.

The creche will be open to the public this Sunday from noon to 4 p.m.

This nativity depicts the baby Jesus in the manger with the wise men in observance. The Union Presbyterian Church will be holding public viewing of the nativities from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday
