Still time for chili at CrimeStoppers event

PEN CITY CURRENT -

FORT MADISON - Fort Madison Hy-Vee is the place for some hot chili on a cold night and proceeds are going to help bolster the efforts of the Lee County CrimeStoppers organization.

Deputies from the Lee County Sheriff's Department and officers from the Fort Madison Police Department are on hand serving chili complete with garlic bread and crackers and you can even get a peanut butter sandwich to go with it.

Red buckets located next to cash registers are the places for donations, but Board member DJ Henshaw said funds have been a little slow coming in, but at least 6 payouts have already been made for information leading to arrests.

"We're just getting started," Henshaw said. "We've put out some envelopes and that kind of thing, but we're hoping this helps create some awareness for us. It takes a lot of money to get these types of programs up and running."

He also gave credit to the Burlington Area CrimeStoppers for that group's assistance in getting the Lee County chapter back up and running.

Chili dinners will be served until 7 p.m. at the Fort Madison and Keokuk Hy-Vee locations and $5 gets you all the chili and garlic bread you can handle.
