Tuesday accident sends four to hospital

LEE COUNTY - A two-vehicle accident on Hwy. 2 about three miles west of Fort Madison sent four to the hospital on Tuesday afternoon.

At 12:59 p.m., the Iowa State Patrol and Lee County Sheriff's deputies responded to the accident in the 2400 block of Hwy 2.

According to an Iowa State Patrol report, a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix driven by Michael Andrew Hayes, 48, of Fort Madison crossed the center line and collided head on with a 2004 Chrysler Sebring driving by Cassandra Renee Watts, 27, of Fort Madison. Both Hayes and Watts were transported to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by MedForce. Two other passengers, Gina Marie Hayes, 47, of Fort Madison, who was in the Hayes vehicle and Kara Allyn Shallcross, 28, also of Fort Madison, who was a passenger in the Watts vehicle were both transported to Fort Madison Community Hospital by Lee County EMS.

The report indicated Hayes was traveling westbound, crossed the center line and collided with Watts' vehicle in the east bound lane. Hayes vehicle came to rest on the roadway while Watts' vehicle came to stop in the south ditch.
