FM woman charged with OWI after hitting police cruiser

BY PEN CITY STAFF - A Fort Madison woman was arrested on suspicion of OWI-1st offense on Thursday after she collided with a Fort Madison Police cruiser

Lee County Sheriff's deputies arrested Jane Kay Gilpin, 67, of Fort Madison, at 9:44 p.m. Thursday at the intersection of 15th Street and Avenue F. She was taken to the Lee County Correctional Center and jailed.

Sheriff's deputies responded to the accident at the intersection where Gilpin's vehicle had been traveling westbound on Avenue F when her vehicle struck the police cruiser. The cruiser was being driven by officer James Carle. According to the sheriff's report, Carle had stopped northbound on 15th Street and proceeded into the intersection when Gilpin's vehicle struck the cruiser near the back tires. The cruiser came to rest between 15th Street and the sidewalk on the northeast side of the intersection.

Gilpin's vehicle came to rest on the north side of Avenue F.

There were no injuries reported as a result of the incident.
