FAIRFIELD – Fort Madison Bloodhound wrestling placed 9 out of 10 wrestlers including two firsts and a second en route to a 5th place team finish at Saturday’s Southern Iowa Classic in Fairfield.

FMHS Head Coach Ryan Smith said that wasn’t an expectation going into the last tournament before districts.

“You know going in I guess I didn’t think of it from that perspective. I think that was a good accomplishment,” Smith said. “You expect Harlan and Aaron and Ryan (all Steffensmeiers) to do that. But with guys like Nathan (Steffensmeier) and Dalton (Woolever) that lack experience…you know they can do it, but you don’t really expect it.”

Junior Ryan Steffensmeier (24-10) wrestled just two matches before securing the title at 113 lbs. After receiving a bye in each of the first two rounds, Steffensmeier then pinned Gage Moorman of Centerville in just 56 seconds and then faced 38-10 Tyler Landgrebe of Eddyville/Blakesburg/Fremont. Steffensmeier got on the board quick in the first two minutes and then was able to hold off Landgrebe for a 7-6 decision.

Smith said Ryan drew the No. 1 seed in the bracket, but the top three in the bracket were equal caliber.

“I expected a tough match there and it was a tough match. He did a good job of getting the first take down and getting some back points, but (his opponent) was really bringing the heat in that third period. That was a good win for Ryan against a tough kid.”

Junior Harlan Steffensmeier won the title in the 138 lb. bracket when he pinned Andrew Waite of Washington at the 2:57 mark. Steffensmeier pinned all four opponents he faced, the first three of which didn’t get out of the first two-minute period.

Sophomore Sam Hayes capture a 2nd place finish at 195 lbs., but injured his back in the semifinals when he was lifted and slammed to the mat, which is an illegal move. Hayes couldn’t finish the match due to back spasms as a result of the slam but was awarded the win because of the move. But the injury prevented Hayes from wrestling in the 1st place match.

Smith said he thinks Hayes, who’s wrestling for only the third time since returning from an injury 10 days ago, will be okay.

“Obviously that’s not a situation we wanted to encounter, but I think he’s going to be okay,” he said.

Other highlights included a fourth-place finish for Aaron Steffensmeier who went 2-for-2 on the day with two pins but ended up losing a 6-3 decision to Zach Barnes of Fairfield in the 3rd place match.

Freshman Danen Settles captured a sixth-place finish after going 2-for-3 on the day not including a bye win in the 1st consolation round. Settles won a major decision 10-2 and a decision 11-10 before suffering back-to-back pins in the consolation semis and the 5th place match.

Smith said Settles gives up a lot to his opponents and is always battling to the end.

“Considering he’s a freshman giving up 30 pounds to most of these kids he did very well. He is not ever a defeated wrestler and you’re always going to get his best effort.”

Other places for the meet were Elton Kruse 5th at 106 lbs., Nathan Steffensmeier 6th at 120 lbs., Dalton Woolever 6th at 145 lbs., and Diego Lozano 5th at 182 lbs.

FMHS freshman Danen Settles goes head to head with Chariton’s Jordan Jackson in afternoon action Saturday in Fairfield. Settles won the match 10-2 and placed 6th at the meet.
Dalton Woolever (145 lbs.) is knotted up with Mt. Pleasant’s Jaden Davis in Saturday’s action. Woolever lost twice by decision to Davis and placed 6th at the meet.
FMHS’ Harlan Steffensmeier (138) is 34-3 on the season after running the table at the Southern Iowa Classic Saturday. Steffensmeier pinned all four of his opponents on the day.
