Up and downs at Fort Madison United Methodist Church

FORT MADISON – Remodeling and installing an elevator in an older church building has its “ups and downs.” After fourteen months of construction, hours and hours of volunteer time donated by church members with painting and carpentry skills along with installation of new carpetting on the main floor and the street level entry way, Fort Madison United Methodist Church (formerly the First and Santa Fe United Methodist Churches) celebrated completion of Phase I of the building project on Sunday, February 19, with the dedication of the new elevator. “Phase II,” said Lane Van, Pastor, “is to put stops on our mezzanine and top floors and will be completed at a later date.”

“We are very excited,” continued Van. “I see this as an outward sign of how God is preparing us for renwal and growth. This year, we'll be exploring ways we can use the gift of our church building to serve our neighbors and make a positive impact on life in Fort Madison.” During January and February, church leaders asked for ideas from people in the church on how to do that. They also surveyed the congregation to determine their perception of needs in the community and what kinds of ministries they would support.

To get a broader perspective of community challenges and needs, the church will invite leaders from local government, organizations and businesses to breakfast to network and answer one question: what isn't happening in Fort Madison that should happen? The event will be on Thursday, March 16, at 7:30 am at the church.

Fort Madison United Methodist Church, a caring community offering opportunities to grow, is located at 510-9th Street, across from Central Park in Fort Madison. Worship on Sunday is at 10:15 am. The new handicap accessible entry the Chapel door on 9th Street. Contact the church at (319) 372-6426 or on Facebook.
