Lee County Live Healthy releases 2017 food guide

Posted

The 2017 Live Healthy Lee County Local Food Guide is ready to assist you and your family on where to find fresh, locally grown produce; restaurants that use fresh, local foods; grocery stores that sell fresh, local foods; food pantries who accept locally grown food donations; senior meal sites; and farmers markets where they can buy from local growers.

This is the third year for the guide which continues to grow. “Every year we have a new producer or a new restaurant to add to the guide which is exciting to see,” states Emily Biddenstadt, Lee County Health Department Community Outreach Coordinator. “This year we even had to add a couple pages to be able to fit all the information.”

Inside the guide is a “Quick List” which is a graph of who sells what. Past it each producer is listed with address, contact information, and hours. The restaurants listed make dishes and specials using locally grown food when in season. Along with the days and times of the farmer’s markets it is also indicates which ones have stands that accept WIC and Senior FMNP.

“We know the food pantry listing has been appreciated because it has informed our producers, even our home gardeners, that if they have extra there is a place that will take the produce,” adds Biddenstadt.

LHLC would like to thank Fort Madison and Keokuk Hy-Vee stores, Pilot Grove Savings Bank, The Scotts Miracle Grow Company, and the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach for sponsoring the LHLC Local Food Guide.
