FORT MADISON - High winds made for interesting tennis on Thursday as Fort Madison downed visiting West Burlington Notre Dame 6-3.

Both squads had trouble battling strong winds out of the north, but once adjustments were made, the Hounds started putting Ws on the board.

Fort Madison got wins from No. 2 through No. 5 highlighted by a 8-0 win by No. 4 sophomore Larissa Ferrill over McKenzie Fry. Kearstyn Johnson got her second win a row with an 8-5 win over Claire Hackenmiller. Hope Gray won 8-5 at No. 3 over Delaney Williams and Mercedee Doty won 8-4 over Kendell Rheinschmidt. Junior No. 1 player Katie Larson lost 4-8 at and Charissa Smith lost to Riley Brueck 2-8 to round out the singles action.

Larson and Gray won 8-6 in doubles action rebounding from a loss last week to Mt. Pleasant. Johnson and Ferrill also won 8-6 in doubles. While Doty and Smith fell 2-8 in their doubles contest.

"A much better showing tonight," head coach Amy Doherty said. "Ferrill breezed through her match very quickly, and once they got playing through the wind figured out, Johnson, Gray and Doty came out on top. The doubles teams looked significantly better tonight, with great shots at the net and much better teamwork."

In junior varsity action, Lilly Scott and Lanie Kuntz won 4-0 in a doubles matchup. Alyse Schmidt and Marlee Klesner won 4-1. Zoe Ramatowski and CJ Lozano lost 0-4 and freshman Jamie Folks and Paige Auge lost 2-4 in the first-to-four contests.

The girls travel to Keokuk on Monday for 4:30 start.
