Lady Hounds strike a win over Canton

BY PCC STAFF FORT MADISON - The Fort Madison girls soccer team kept the ball on their half of the field for the majority of the game and came away with their first win of the season Thursday in high school action, 3-1 over visiting Canton, Mo. Senior Emily Wolf got the Lady Hounds their first goal of the season on a drive up the middle with one defender on her hip. She squirted the ball past the Lady Tigers' goalie's left side and into the net with about 9:30 left in the first half. Fort Madison outshot the Lady Tigers 11-0 in the first half capped by a dramatic score with 15 seconds left in the half by junior Taylor Shannan. The Hounds were able to break up a run by Canton's girls at midfield and managed to move the ball up to Shannan who was around the opposition net for a good part of the evening. The ball popped up in the air and Shannan bounced it forward with her upper body and managed to get loose of her defender and slap it past the goalie in the middle of the net for a 2-0 lead at the half. Kalifa McCaleb scored the other goal in the second half for the Hounds. Head Coach Sebastian Siefert said the win puts the Lady Hounds in a better frame of mind after a 9-0 drubbing at the hands of Burlington earlier this week. "This was an important win for us because now we host Keokuk with a 1-1 record rather than being down 0-2," he said. "We still have a lot of work to do, but the girls know this and come to practice ready to learn. I have told the girls this early on but this is by far the best team we've had. They are working really well together, getting along well, and are very supportive of one another. Without this kind of harmony as the foundation it is hard to win soccer games." Seifert credited the back field trio for keeping the ball in the Hounds control for most of the game. "Kate Young, McKenna Fehseke, and Amber Dilsaver played as our back three and worked well together. Fehseke, Emily Wolf, and goalie Josie Pumphrey were the only three players not subbed out all game.
