MUSCATINE - The Fort Madison boys tennis team lost their first match of the season Tuesday against a veteran Muscatine squad.

"We had nice competition and closely fought through most of the matches," said Head Coach Dean Hogan.

At No. 1 singles Dante Seaney fell to the Muskies' Noland Osland, 6-7, (3-7 tiebreak) and 2-6. Johnny Hernandez took the first set off Muscatine's Ben Sweere, but then dropped the second set 2-6 to force the 10-point tiebreak and lost that 1-10.

Bryce Timmons defeated Sam Avery 6-7 (4-7), 0-6. at No. 3 singles.

"Sometimes you see scores like 6-1, 6-0 and you don't see that the match was a lot closer than it appeared. Sam did a good job in that match."

The Hounds got another hard-fought loss at No. 4 when the Muskies' Trayton Fuegen downed Austin Krueger 5-7, 4-6.

The Muskies completed the singles sweep when Evan Kelly beat Tim Shinn 6-4, 6-3 and Luke Zobel downed the Hounds Blake Feuerhammer 6-0, 6-2.

In doubles action, Muscatine again came away with the sweep, when Osland and Sweere handled Seaney and Hernandez, 6-2, 6-2 in No. 1 doubles. Avery and Krueger couldn't get the Hounds on the board at No. 2 doubles against Timmons and Fuegen, falling 3-6, 1-6, and Shinn and Feuerhammer fell to Zobel and Kelly 0-6, 2-6 to round out the varsity action.

The Hounds are off until Saturday when they travel again to Muscatine for an Invitational. Hogan said the Saturday invite will expose the Hounds to some very strong 2A and 1A schools and will give a strong showing of where tennis is at in eastern Iowa.

In junior varsity action Tuesday, Gage Hine managed to get the only win of the day when he downed Ethan Heth 6-2. Hine also fell to Sam Wieskamp 1-6 in his second match of the day.
