Veterans' health fair planned for April 29th

The Lee County Communication/Education Taskforce has been planning an informational health fair for Veterans of all ages. This health promotion event will be held on Saturday, April 29 at Montrose Riverfront Inc. at 201 N. 1st Street, Montrose from 9:00am to Noon. Veterans, Active Military, and their families are invited to attend to learn more about health, wellness, and Veteran’s assistance from scheduled speakers as well as vendors.

Door prizes and breakfast items will also be provided from local vendors and area businesses. The event is part of the county’s Health Improvement Plan as a result of the Community Health Needs Assessment completed in 2015 by involved community organizations and citizens of Lee County.

Event speakers will include Dr. William Napier, a physician at Fort Madison Community Hospital; Keith Keller, LMSW a therapist from Counseling Associates, Inc.; Cathy Mehmert, a Dietician from Fort Madison Community Hospital; Jacqui Walker, from the VetAssist Program; and a representative from Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs.

Along with the speakers the Jean Espy DAR Chapter will recognize and present Viet Name Veterans and/or their family members with a certificate to express their appreciation for their service. Veterans and/or their families will be asked to sign-in at the registration table that morning to assure their recognition.

Informational booths will include health and wellness resources from Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs, Lee County Emergency Management, American Red Cross, IowaWORKS, American Eyecare, Keokuk Area Hospital, Lee County Health Department, Counseling Associates, The Vet Assist Program, Fort Madison Community Hospital, Live Healthy Lee County Coalition, International Eye Care, Fort Madison and Hoerner YMCA, along with other community resources from other organizations and community partners in the county. A SEIBUS driven by a community volunteer will be available to transport veterans from the Fort Madison Community Hospital at 8:00am and Hy-Vee in Keokuk at 8:45am to the event in Montrose, and will return passengers to these pick up locations following the event.
