WASHINGTON - Just five games into the season, the Fort Madison girls soccer team has hit a milestone.
The Lady Hounds blasted eight goals in Friday's 8-0 win over Washington on the road in Southeast Conference high school girls soccer action.
Head Coach Sebastian Seifert said his squad has already scored as many goals this year as they have in any year in the past.
In the three seasons of this program's existence we have never scored more than 15 goals," Seifert said. "We are now at that milestone, having scored 15 goals in the first five games. That fact alone is very exciting for us."
Junior Taylor Shannan again led the way for Fort Madison with four goals from her left wing position. Senior Emily Wolf, who was voted co-player of the game along with Shannan, had three goals and Dezire Kline added the eighth score.
Fort Madison didn't score until the 15 minute mark in the first half, but then rattled off five more shots in the net before the end of the first half to take a 6-0 lead at halftime.
"We had a rough start to the game, our passes didn't connect quite as well as Coach Burken and I would have liked but the girls figured it out after a while and with about 15 minutes into the first half we scored our first goal," Seifert said. "We put in a lot of subs throughout the game. We have three games next week so we wanted to rotate quite a bit. Allison Brune and Kalifa McCaleb played a good game as our defensive mids making sure the ball didn't penetrate through our defensive line. We only allowed a couple of shots on our goal all game."
Seifert also said the team's 3-2 record is an exciting part of the season.
"That's something this program has not experienced before so we are just excited about the little things in life right now. We are happy that the team is getting along so well. We have a really good chemistry at the moment. We are happy that we have minimal injuries and that we had a good turnout at the beginning of the season."
The girls travel to Macomb, Ill on Monday for a 4:30 p.m. kickoff.
