FORT MADISON - Let's call it a winning streak.
The Fort Madison Bloodhounds beat Fairfield Tuesday at home 1-0 in girls Southeast Iowa conference high school soccer.
Both teams battled for 80 minutes without anyone putting the ball in the net. The game was decided when Dezire Kline scored in the first OT period.
"We knew going into the game that it was going to be very tough. Fairfield was 7-0 coming to Fort Madison," said head coach Sebastian Seifert. "The girls were confident, though, and they knew what the plan was. They knew that if they stuck to the plan that they could win the game."
Emily Wolf and Kline each had four shots on goal in the game. The Lady Trojans keyed on red-hot Taylor Shannan who had scored seven goals in two games last week, but has been held out of the net the last two. She did have two shots on goal in the game, however.
"Our defense played very well and we pushed through everything, even when we were tired. We aren't finished yet, though," Shannan said after the game.
Seifert said the defense kept the Hounds in the game and kept the scoring opportunities small for Fairfield.
"They played very tough and did not allow many shots on our goal. The back three today was Sarah Bernhardt, McKenna Fehseke, and Chayse Lowney. Josie Pumphrey was in goal. In front of our back three we had Allison Brune and Kalifa McCaleb, who played an exceptional game. I don't think I have seen either one of them work as hard and run as much as they did today," Seifert said.
McCaleb was named player of the game by her teammates.
Senior Brynn Schroeder said Fairfield was a challenge that would define the rest of the season.
"Playing Fairfield was tough because it held so much more weight with the team. This was a game that would let us see how we would continue on through the last half of the season. I definitely feel that we went into the game very well. We were on the high of a 3 game winning streak, but we didn't let that affect our mindset for the game. We didn't let up and just continued to work hard until we were able to get a goal in during overtime. Defense did an outstanding job and offense just put the icing on the cake."
The Hounds are now 5-2 overall and 3-1 in conference.
