HAMILTON - A 33-year-old Fort Madison woman has been arrested after leading police on a 16-mile chase that ended with a collision on the Burlington Northern-Santa Fe Bridge in Niota.
According to a release from Hamilton Assistant Police Chief Nick Jamerson, at about 2:40 a.m. Friday morning a Hamilton Police Officer conducted a traffic stop just east of the city on U.S. Highway 136. The driver of the stopped vehicle, Jennifer L. Leggett, 33, of Fort Madison allegedly fled the scene in her vehicle.
A deputy with the Hancock County Sheriff's Department assisted in the chase which ended at the bridge, when Leggett is reported to have rammed the deputy's patrol vehicle. No injuries were reported but the patrol vehicle sustained heavy damage.
Leggett was taken into custody without further incident and transported to the Hancock County Jail in Carthage.
Leggett was charged with aggravated fleeing and eluding, reckless driving, criminal damage to state supported property, aggravated assault with the motor vehicle, driving under the influence of drugs, possession of methamphetamine, and multiple other traffic violations.
Assisting the sheriff's department and Hamilton police were the Fort Madison Police Department and the Hancock County State's Attorney's office.
Leggett is being held pending an initial court appearance.
