FORT MADISON - The Fort Madison Bloodhound girls soccer team took about eight minutes to get on the board Monday night, but then goals came quickly as they put away Washington 10-0 at the Baxter Sports Complex.
Junior Taylor Shannan posted four goals in the game for Fort Madison. Senior Emily Wolf put three shots in the back of the net. Dezire Kline scored the first two goals of the game, the first coming at the 32 minute mark on a shot that arced in over the Washington goalie Jessica Hora who had a busy night keeping tabs on the Hound strikers.
Kline found the net again about six minutes later on a hard shot that slid under the goal keeper's left side. Then Shannan and Wolf got in on the action with the next six goals, two of which were a mere 62 seconds apart. Sally Johnstun scored the last goal of the first half while substituting for Kline. It was Johnstun's first varsity goal of the year.
"We were able to pass the ball around well and create several chances because of playing patiently and not forcing passes," said head coach Sebastian Seifert. "The girls are starting to see that patience pays off and sometimes you just need to play another pass instead of trying to go for goal."
The win was the third consecutive shutout for Josie Pumphrey, although Washington didn't play offense very much in the contest and Pumphrey only needed one save on the night.
Our defense played well, we started with a back four and later moved to a back three. McKenna Fehseke was once again in control and kept a cool head during several attacking waves by Washington," Seifert said. "There is, of course, still a lot of work to be done. We are not satisfied with the way we are playing but are of course very excited about our record this year. We keep working on the little things. If we do enough of the little things right the big things will come automatically.
Taylor Shannan was voted player of the game. The Bloodhounds travel to Fairfield on Thursday and Davenport North on Friday.
The Hounds have won seven of the last eight outscoring their opponents 17-0 in the stretch. FMHS is 8-3 and 4-2 in the conference with the only two losses to Keokuk. Fairfield lost Thursday 4-0 to Oskaloosa which puts a share of the conference title on the line in that match.
