George Lavern Johnston, 88, of Bonaparte, Iowa passed away at 2:30 p.m. Friday, May 12, 2017 at the Keosauqua Health Care Center in Keosauqua, Iowa.
Born August 20, 1928 in Barron, Wisconsin. On October 18, 1950 he married Helen Kehl in Valley City, North Dakota. She preceded him in death on October 25, 1998.
Survivors include his two daughters: Judie Miller who lived with him in Bonaparte and Jeannie Cross of Arlington, Texas; one son; Gary (wife Susie) Johnston of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin; one half brother: Jim; one step sister: Geri; seven grandchildren: Amber, Ashley, Alissa, Todd, Megan, Nikki and Tiffany and two great grandchildren: Jordan and Lauren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife: Helen; two brothers and two step-brothers.
JOHNSTON
George served in the United States Air Force and later spent his whole career working at Armour Dial which he began in Minnesota. In 1971 he was transferred to Fort Madison, Iowa where he has been a resident of Bonaparte for forty six years. He enjoyed the casino, hunting, fishing, bowling, card club and watching football. George lived a full life, was legally blind for the past thirty years and died of natural causes.
Per George’s wishes, his body has been entrusted to Schmitz Funeral Home for cremation.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
