MT. PLEASANT - The Fort Madison girls softball team continues struggle with run support for pitching as they dropped both games of a double header in Mt. Pleasant.

Mt. Pleasant took the first game 10-0 and the second 8-1 after putting up four runs in the sixth inning to put that game out of reach.

The first game was finished on the 10-run rule in the fifth inning as the Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one off the Hounds' Chase Lowney, who took the loss.

Olivia Williams was the only FMHS batter to get on base with a double. Mt. Pleasant's Bailey Johnson gave up just one hit and struck out eight in the win. Lowney gave up 10 runs, all earned, on 10 hits, while striking out five and walking three.

Senior Lexi Schmidt, who will be playing at Clarke College next year, took to the rubber in the second game. Schmidt kept the Panthers in check until the four-run bottom of the sixth put the game out of reach for the Hounds, despite a solo home run from junior Kamryn Bailey that landed halfway up in a tree in dead left in the second inning. Those would be the only fireworks for the Hounds as the Panther's Cali Liechty held the Hounds in check the rest of way.

Schmidt gave up eight runs, only three of which were earned, on nine hits, striking out five, and walking two. Her earned run average for the game was a respectable 3.50.

Bailey went 2 of 3 on the day to lead the Hounds from the plate. Schmidt and Kylee Cashman had the other hits for Fort Madison. The Hounds are 2-6 on the season and travel to Wilton Friday for a double header. They return from a six-game road streak to host Fairfield on Friday.
