FORT MADISON - The P.A.W. Patrol sent one of their heros to Kempker's in Fort Madison on Saturday.

"Rocky the Recycler" showed up to meet area kids and their families to encourage responsible recycling in Lee County as part of Kempker's True Value Rentals Customer Appreciation Day.

The Great River Regional Waste Authority's new mascot was on hand as part of a new strategy to educate local youth and families on the stewardship of recycling.

Wade Hamm, director at GRRWA, said he's hoping to team Rocky up with other businesses and local schools to continue the program.

"As being part of our environmental management system it is our goal to have more mobile events," Hamm said.

"Kempker's is the first business-partnered event we've done. We have been happy with the turnout today, we anticipated participation to be lower given that it is new, but as we continue to partner with area businesses participation will increase. This will make the fourth Household Hazardous Waste collection event Great River Regional Waste has done this year. We have three more events in the works before winter. I'd like to thank Kempker's for partnering with us on this event. It is our goal to partner with more area businesses on these events.

If businesses or groups are interested in partnering with GRRWA please call Wade Hamm at 319-372-6140.
