FORT MADISON – During the overnight hours of June 29-30 2017 a person or persons vandalized the new Fareway Grocery building at 1820 Ave. H in Fort Madison.

The nature of the vandalism is a spray painted message on the east side of the building. The message is "SHOOT COPS NOT DOPE".

Earlier this year the Police Department investigated a number of incidences of spray paint graffiti. It is unknown at this time whether this incident is related or not.

An anonymous donor has approached the City with an offer of up to a $1000.00 reward for any information that leads to the arrest of the perpetrator.

The Fort Madison Police Department takes these incidents very seriously as with all crimes. If the crime is charged as a vandalism which is a simple misdemeanor, punishable by a fine of up to $625 or imprisonment not to exceed 30 days. If the threat to shoot police officers has any legitimacy a charge of terrorism could be added, which is a class D felony punishable by a fine of up to $750 - $7,500 and/or imprisonment of up to 5 years.

Anyone having any information regarding this crime can contact Investigator Jack Gray of the Fort Madison Police Department at 319-372-2525 or Lee County Crime Stoppers at 1-800-382- 8900.
