WEST POINT – The Holy Trinity Crusaders scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap their regular season with a 6-3 win Wednesday night over Pekin (14-9) in boys high school baseball.
The game was tied at three apiece going into the sixth inning. Reed Fehseke had come in in relief of Cameron Bahl in the fifth inning and, after giving up a single to Cody Hassenin to center, got the next three hitters out to set up a dramatic bottom half.
Senior Ben Tinguely got plunked and Nathan Bredemeyer reached on an error at short. Cole Thornton then laid down a bunt down the first base line to push the runners to 2nd and 3rd base.
Quentin Schneider then popped to first, but again, a Pekin error allowed him to reach safely. Fehseke and Kadin Medland both worked full-count bases loaded walks to score Tinguely and Bredemeyer. Collin Thornton then fanned before Kyle Bredemeyer was walked on four straight pitches to plate Schneider.
Bahl then popped out to third to end the inning with the bases loaded.
After starting the 7th with a walk, the Crusaders got the next three hitters out to end the game.
Pekin outhit the Crusaders six to five. Collin Thornton and Bahl led the Crusaders at the plate each going 2-of-4. Bahl had two RBIs off a fifth-inning, two-run double to right. He was thrown out trying to stretch it to a triple.
Nathan Bredemeyer had the only other hit for HTC.
Bahl went five innings on the mound giving up three runs, two earned on five hits, five walks, and a strike out. Fehseke gave up one hit on four strikeouts in two innings of relief.
