FORT MADISON - A social group out of Burlington and Fort Madison is working to raise funds to buy $500 worth of school supplies for needy area children.

Darrell Newquist said the group of about 10 started last year and raised about $250 to buy supplies for needy families. He said the project started last year when Menards had a big rebate special on school supplies.

"They were giving a rebate that basically covered the cost of the supplies so we thought what a good way to help get needy families in the area some school supplies," Newquist said. "Last year we bought about $250 worth and most of that was out of our pockets, but we're shooting for $500 this year."

Newquist said he's been knocking on some doors to raise funds and is looking for groups and organizations to help fund the project.

"We're a small group and we've done fair so far, but there's always room for more," he said. "Last year the supplies stayed in Burlington, but since two of us in the group live in Fort Madison, we thought we should split the supplies between the two cities."

He said the group will be having a supply giveaway at the Fort Madison Public Library from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 19. Anything left over after the handout will be split between Richardson and Lincoln elementary schools in Fort Madison.

Financial contributions or supplies can be sent to the group at P.O. Box 153, West Burlington, Iowa 52655. For more information or a Federal Tax ID for donations, Newquist can be reached at darrell.newquist@gmail.com.
