KEOKUK - And yet another group will be helping give disadvantaged families a hand with the school year just three weeks away.

The United Way of the Great River Region and Trinity United Methodist Church in Keokuk have partnered for the third consecutive year to bring the tri-county region a Back-to-School festival.

“This event is so much fun,” said Jaclyn Lansing, Executive Director of UWGRR. “Not only do kids receive a school supply-filled backpack, but they get to meet with area organizations, receive a dental or eye screening, play games, and even get a haircut.”

The event will be held at Trinity United Methodist Church, 2330 Plank Road on Saturday, August 5th from noon to 3 p.m.

“There will be games for students hosted by Trinity and area churches, boxed lunches for kids provided by the Salvation Army as well as our signature TUMC popcorn and sweet treats,” said Bob Dorothy, Chairman of the Trinity United Methodist event.

If you would like to donate or volunteer, please contact Sue Prochazka, UWGRR Volunteer Center Coordinator, at 319-524-4504, or stop by the United Way office at Blondeau Street, Keokuk.

Fort Madison Kiwanis, in conjunction with teacher volunteers with the Fort Madison Community School District are holding a Back-to-School Health Fair on Aug. 12 from 10 a.m. to noon. Only those preregistered have backpacks prepared, but other information and health opportunities will be available at the fair as well.

Darrell Newquist and the Gentlemen's Club of Fort Madison and Burlington are also taking donations to help fill backpacks with school supplies this year. Donations for that effort can be sent to P.O. Box 153 West Burlington, Iowa 52655.
