HTC takes three to start SEISC volleyball tourney

CARDINAL - The Holy Trinity girls volleyball team swept three matches in early round Southeast Iowa Superconference action Thursday night.

The Crusaders dropped host Cardinal of Eldon, 21-11, 21-15 before stopping Mediapolis 21-17, 21-18 and then Van Buren 21-6, 21-14.

Senior Maya Rashid paced the Crusaders with 52 assists across all three matches including 19 in the last game of the night against Van Buren. She also had 25 digs, 2 blocks and was 24 of 26 serving.

Junior Emily Box was 61-68 on the attack with 26 kills, 13 of which came in the two sets against Mediapolis. She also had 24 digs, two blocks and was 19 of 20 serving with five aces.

Elyse Pothitakis was a perfect 25-of-25 serving with two aces and had 24 digs on the night. Eryn Anderson was also perfect at the line going 24 of 24 with two aces, 14 digs and at the net she was 27 of 34 on attacks with 12 kills. Madison Mohrfeld was 15 of 15 attacking with eight kills. Sam Hoenig again was a perfect 16 of 16 serving and had eight assists and four kills. Junior Taylor Boeding was 16 of 17 serving with two aces and was 28 of 31 at the net with 14 kills.

The 17-2 Crusaders finish up the conference tournament on Saturday at Southeastern Community College with the finals beginning at 5 p.m.

In the state rankings the Crusaders dropped to 6th in Class 1A after two losses last week to New London and Fort Madison. The Crusaders beat New London in their next meeting at the Holy Trinity Classic. New London was ranked 5th in Class 1A in the latest poll released Thursday.
