Jose Armando Perez Montenegro, 97, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away at 12:55 p.m. on Friday, October 6, 2017 at The Kensington. He was born on April 4, 1920 in Havana, Cuba to Jose Manuel Perez Duquesne & Julie Montenegro Sanabria. He married Margarita “Margo” Garcia Valladares on July 7, 1954 in Havana, Cuba. She preceded him in death on January 23, 2004. He received a BS in Agronomy Engineering from the University of Havana in 1943, received a Sugar Refinery Chemical Expert Certification from the University of Havana in 1944 and received his MA from the University of Iowa in 1966. He worked as an agronomist for the sugar cane industries in Cuba and after coming to the United States in October of 1960, he taught Spanish at Fort Madison High School for 23 years until his retirement in 1986. He was a member of the Fort Madison Kiwanis Club and was a past board member of the Fort Madison Public Library.

Jose is survived by: 1-niece: Mirta (Bill Leddy) Ramer of Muscatine, IA; 2-great nephews: Joseph (Kari Stansberry) Ramer & Christopher Ramer both of Muscatine, IA; 2-great great nieces: Jersey Lynn Ramer & Joslynn Marie Ramer, both of Muscatine, IA; 1-great great nephew: Riley Drake Norwood of Muscatine, IA and his good friends, Fred & Kitty Winke of Fort Madison, IA. He was preceded in death by: his parents, wife and 2-sisters: Bertha Perez Montenegro & Haydee Perez Montenegro.
Per his wishes, cremation has been entrusted to King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. The family received friends from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, October 10, 2017 with a memorial service to immediately following at King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory with Rev. Mark P. Spring officiating. Burial was held in Sacred Heart Cemetery. A memorial has been established for the Fort Madison Public Library.
