Hellige qualifies for state at Pekin

PEKIN - Matt Hellige punched his ticket for the state cross country meet with an 8th-place finish at the Class 1A meet in Pekin Thursday night.

Hellige finished the 5K in 18:02 for the highest finish for HTC. The Crusaders took 8th place overall as a team with Jacob Mohrfeld finishing second on the Holy Trinity squad and 48th overall with a 20:22 time. Ben Abolt was third for the Crusaders and 47th overall at 20:33.

Sam Avery and Chandler Rung took 4th and 5th places for HTC with overall meet finishes of 57th and 72nd, respectively, to round out the scoring places for Holy Trinity with times of 21:05 and 22:19.

Wyatt Hellman finished 86th in the Class 1A run in a time of 24:08.

Head coach Matt Mohrfeld said he was happy with his team's effort, despite missing two runners with injury and illness.

"Matt Hellige had a stand out run finishing 8th overall and qualifying for state. I'm really proud of how my team performed both tonight and the entire season," he said.
