ISP officer back home after Wednesday attack

BY PCC STAFF FORT MADISON - An Iowa State Penitentiary correctional officer injured in an attack early Wednesday morning has been released from the hospital and is recovering at home, according to a release from the Iowa State Penitentiary Friday afternoon. The officer was assaulted with two homemade weapons and was originally taken to Fort Madison Community Hospital, but was then transferred to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics by ambulance and was listed in stable condition. The name of the officer injured Wednesday as well as a separate injury to another officer that occurred over the weekend have not been released by ISP officials.

According the Wednesday release, the ISP continues in lockdown/restricted movement status as of today and prison officials have no plans to change that status as of this time.

"The investigation into this matter continues. So far, there are no indications that the incident that occurred on Saturday is related to Wednesday’s assault. However, both offenders have ties to groups affiliated with White Supremacy. The institution is conducting thorough searches of all areas of the facility as well as plans are being drafted for modifications to Housing Unit One where Wednesday’s assault occurred. Staffing plans are also being evaluated.

Visits continue to be suspended and the offenders are unable to access the phone system at this time.
