PORT's Boo-Athlon fills Baxter Sports Complex

BY PCC STAFF FORT MADISON - Kids and adults alike came out Saturday morning to help raise funds for the Fort Madison PORT trails as part of the 4th annual PORT Spooktackular Boo-Athlon. Promoting Outdoor Recreational Trails (PORT) spokeswoman Rachel Benda said just under 200 people signed up for one of several runs and bike events at the Baxter Sports Complex. Participants were geared up for runs in regular running/biking gear and some even ran a 5K in Halloween costumes. Spiderman kicked things off with a kids race around the outfield of one of the baseball fields chased by Fort Madison kids dressed up a superheros. This year's event featured a 5K run/walk, a 10-mile bicycling race, and a 5K run/10 mile bike duathalon. First place overall in the 5K run/walk went to 15-year-old Miguel Trejo, who navigated the course in 20:10. Second place overall went to 13-year old Austin Miller who finished in 20:13, and 13-year-old Dayton Davis finished the race in 22:31 good enough for 3rd-place overall. Thirteen-year-old Katelyn Dennis won the female division with a time of 25:02 (6th overall). Lauren Steffensmeier took 2nd in the female division (7th overall) just :04 behind Dennis. Beth Helling Wells took 3rd in the female division with a time of 29:13. In the duathlon 5K run/10-mile bike combination even, Brent Berlett finished in 1st with a time of 57:06. Caleb Jenkins captured 2nd place with a time of 58:32 and Sally Boyer finished in 3rd overall with a time of 1:02.59.
