FMPD arrests Burlington man on attempted murder charge

FORT MADISON -The Fort Madison Police Department arrested a Burlington man late Friday afternoon for attempted murder in connection with a stabbing in Fort Madison this summer.

On August 26, 2017 Fort Madison Police Officers were dispatched to the area of Hardees in Fort Madison to investigate a report of an injured male laying on the street. Upon arrival officers observed the victim had been stabbed in the chest as well as having cuts to his face.

The victim who was conscious at the time indicated he was stabbed in the 900 block of 15th St. in Fort Madison. He was able to state that a person he knows as “Shorty” had stabbed him. The victim was then transported to local hospital and then to the University of Iowa Hospitals for further treatment.

As a result of the ongoing investigation the suspect “Shorty” was identified as Robert McPherson, 40, of Burlington Iowa.

This afternoon, McPherson was located at a residence in Burlington and with assistance from the Burlington Police Department he was taken into custody without incident and has been transported to the Lee County Jail where he is being held on warrants for Attempted Murder, a class B felony punishable by up to 25 years in prison and Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, a class C felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison. Bond on the warrants is set at $50,000 cash only.

A charge being filed is not a plea or finding of guilt all people are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
