Russell William Bates, 66, of Fort Madison, IA, passed away at 11:55 p.m. on Friday, November 3, 2017 at the University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics in Iowa City, IA. He was born on September 4, 1951 in Glendale, CA to William & Diane Robertson Bates. He worked in the information technology field and later worked in the recreational vehicle service industry until 2010. He graduated from Santa Clara University in Santa Clara, CA, majoring in the computer science and mathematics fields. He played football in high school and college, was on the rowing team in college and was a semi-professional dart player. He enjoyed sports, especially watching football on TV. His passion was working with stained glass.

Russell is survived by: his fiancé: Barbara Monson of Fort Madison, IA; 2-daughters: Jennifer (Denis) Maranga of Seattle, WA & Danielle (Steve) German of Middle River, MD; 3-grandchildren: Katrina, Sydney & Samantha; his mother: Diane Gill of California; 2-brothers: Frank (Terri) Gill of Texas & John Gill, Jr. of Arkansas; 4-sisters: Kathryn (Peter) Kastner of Arkansas, Jacquie (Randy) Alderson of California, Janice (Dennis) Horrell of Ohio & Martha (Jared) Bangs of California; several nieces, nephews, cousins & close friends. He was preceded in death by: his father, William, step father, John, his wife, Nancy and a brother, Brian.

Cremation has been entrusted to King-Lynk Funeral Home & Crematory. No services are planned at this time.
