FORT MADISON - With 18 teams in town and some of the finest wrestlers in the area at the Hound Dome, it was no small feat that the Bloodhounds took 3rd place and two titles.

The Bloodhounds were a just a .5 point ahead of Liberty High School out of Wentzville with 119.5. Cedar Rapids Kennedy won the 56th annual Fort Madison Invitational with 236 points, followed by Clinton with 155.

Fort Madison's Harlan Steffensmeier took the title at 152 pounds when he pinned Burlington's Preston Terry 1:46 into the second period. Steffensmeier came into the match rated 4th in the state according to The Predicament's Dec. 14 website rankings. and Terry was also rated 8th at 160 lbs.

In Steffensmeier's three matches leading up to the championship match, he spent a grand total of 58 seconds on the mat, recording three pins, including a :10 pin to open his bracket matches.

"That was a quality opponent - that kid's tough and Harlan put an exclamation point on it," Fort Madison Head Coach Ryan Smith said. "That'll be someone he'll see at districts at the end of the year. So that was great - not just to win, but to beat him on his feet, beat him on top, and beat him on the bottom, and then pin him."

Steffensmeier is 22-1 on the year and is wrestling at two weights heavier this year than in his junior year, where he placed 3rd at the state at 138 pounds. He said the win over Terry tells him he's getting better.

"I've wrestled Preston before and it's good to get this win over him. That tells me I'm improving each year," he said.

Wrestling at the middle weights is something Steffensmeier says fits his style a bit more.

"Over the summer I got a lot bigger and the middle weight is more accustomed to my wrestling style. The lighter weights have more fakes and the matches are quicker paced. This works better for me."

Sam Hayes, who's now 19-3 on the year, ran up against. No. 9 rated Ethan Berry of Clinton. Hayes and Berry stayed locked up in an upright position for most of the match and it wasn't until an overtime period that Hayes was able to score a fall and get the win.

"We we're doing the same thing most of the time, but I felt him kind of crumble in the third period and I knew in OT I was going to able to get to him," Hayes said.

"Hayes is doing well. He had a quality opponent there and another one in the semifinals," Smith said. "The thing with him is getting his confidence in his leg attacks. He does in practice, but it's one of those triggers and you know you just gotta pull it. He's really good at snapping and pulling the head, but once he pulls the trigger on the leg attacks, he's gonna be very dangerous."

The Hounds got fourth-place finishes from Aaron Steffensmeier at 145 lbs. and Ryan Steffensmeier at 126 pounds. Elton Kruse, wrestling at 106, earned a fifth-place finish and Dayne Cordray took 6th place at 120 lbs.

Smith said he hopes next year the event can be made into a two-day event to help alleviate some of the forfeits that occurred due to the national high school wrestling rule that only allows participants to wrestle five matches per day.

Aaron Steffensmeier had to surrender his 3rd place match because it would have been his sixth match of the day.

"There's those situations where you get to the 3rd and 5th place matches and you have a default. If we went to two days, then you go up to five on Friday and five on Saturday. We wouldn't have that many but we could do pool play on Friday and then run two separate brackets on Saturday and no one would have more than five matches on either day," Smith said.

He said the other benefit is the tournament would be able to place the top 16 at each weight class instead of just the top six, which was done at this year's one-day tournament.

Harlan Steffensmeier said he enjoys the larger team tournaments like Saturday's event.

"I love these tournaments that are bigger because you get more matches and you get more of a variety in your opponents," he said.

Hayes said he hopes next year the tournament will go to two days,

"This year was great coming into your gym and being able to go against all these wrestlers," he said. "But if they go to two days, then we have more time to rest and that always allows you to do a little better."
