URBANDALE – A Bloodhound wrestler was named Co-Outstanding wrestler at the Ed Winger Classic in Urbandale after taking down one of the top wrestlers in the state at 152 lbs.Senior Harlan Steffensmeier reached the championship match against Grant Stotts, of West Des Moines Valley on Saturday, and depending on which ranking publication you prefer, Stotts was either No. 1 or No 2 in the state. Steffensmeier won the match 5-4 after a late take down in the final period.IAwrestle.com had Stotts as the top-ranked wrestler at 152 lbs, but the Predicament had him ranked behind Cayd Lara of Fort Dodge at No. 2. Steffensmeier was ranked 4th in both publications.

“It was a barn burner,” Head Coach Ryan Smith said Saturday night. “Harlan got taken down and escaped in the first, then he got a take down at the end of the first period and it was tied at 4-4. There weren’t any take downs in the second period, but in the third period Harlan got another take down and was able to ride him out.”

“That guy was rated No 1 or No. 2 in the state depending on where you look, but he’s a tough dude. He won state as a sophomore.”

Smith said he couldn’t remember the last time a Fort Madison wrestler was named outstanding or co-outstanding wrestler and said he was going to have to look at the books and see when the last time Fort Madison had a champion at the Urbandale meet.

With just three weeks remaining before the run to state begins, Smith said this should give Steffensmeier more confidence going into regional and state action.

“This helps him for sure. We saw Lara last week and had a close match with him and with the win today, it validates that he’s a contender,” Smith said. “There’s still some work to be done, of course.”

Steffensmeier, now 34-2, on the season got to the championship match with a :19 pin the first round and two technical falls at 15-0 and 16-0 working through the bracket.

At 126 lbs, Ryan Steffensmeier (21-14) took 2nd place after being pinned in the finals by Kayden Kauzlarich of Centerville at 3:39. Steffensmeier won by decision and then had a pin over Peter Erickson of Johnston in :20 in the quarterfinals before winning by a close 7-6 decision over Keaton Speicher of Iowa City West to reach the finals.

“It’s good for him to get back on a winning track,” Smith said. “He’s wrestled a tough schedule and has more losses than we would have liked but he gutted out some close matches to get himself into the finals.”

Aaron Steffensmeier (31-11) took 5th place at the meet at 145 lbs. He advanced with a pin in round 1 of the tourney, then was pinned by North Scott’s Collin Lewis. Steffensmeier recorded another pin in the consolation bracket round 2, but lost a tough 3-1 decision in round 3 to Brock Parker of Waukee. He ran up against Lewis again in the 5th place match, but Lewis had to take a medical forfeit giving Steffensmeier the win.

Danen Settles took 7th place at 220 lbs with a win over Tanner Teem of Urbandale 9-3 in the seventh place match on the consolation side.

The Hounds took 8th place in the 21-team tournament.
