MONTROSE - Lee County Supervisor Don Hunold announced today that he will not be seeking re-election to the Board of Supervisors in this year's election.

Hunold, who spent 12 years on the Central Lee Community School District Board of Directors and is finishing his fourth year as a supervisor, said after Tuesday's meeting he will only serve one term on the board.

"This is my last year," Hunold said. "I'm going to give it up. I've had a few health issues, but now I'm cancer free and there's some things I want to do and I want to get them done before something else happens, so I'm gonna to call it quits."

Hunold, a Democrat, said he's happy in how the county has progressed despite tightening budgets."

"That's an ongoing battle with the state and that's fine, we all know that," he said. "I just wanted to let the public know so if someone is interested in running they can get their name out there."

Hunold was elected in 2014 with 1,620 votes. His term will expire at the year's end.

His announcement comes on the heels of State Rep. Jerry Kearns' (D-Keokuk) announcement 10 days ago that he will not be seeking re-election this year. State Rep. Dave Heaton (R-Mt. Pleasant) announced Monday that he, too, will be stepping down this year.

Residents interested in running for office can currently petition and gather signatures to have their names on the ballot, but candidates for county office can't turn in that paperwork until March 5 at the Lee County Auditor's office. The final day for filing paperwork is March 28, according to Nikki Sugars, the Lee County deputy auditor and elections administrator.

Candidates for state office submit their paperwork to the Iowa Secretary of State's office and can do so beginning Feb. 26. They also have until March 28 to turn in paperwork. Residents can also request absentee ballots 120 days prior to the June 7 Primary Election. The ballots will be sent out 29 days prior to the election.

This year's general election is on Nov. 8.
