WASHINGTON D.C. – Congressman Dave Loebsack announced today that the City of Burlington has received a grant for $17 million to make infrastructure upgrades on Main and Jefferson Streets and along the Mississippi River riverfront. This funding comes from the U.S. Department of Transportation’s (DOT) TIGER program, for which Loebsack has been a big champion. Last year, Loebsack wrote to the DOT in support of Burlington’s application for this funding.

“This announcement is great news for the people of Burlington and their efforts to revitalize their downtown and riverfront area,” said Loebsack.“I recently went on a tour of the infrastructure projects that are in the pipeline for the community and I am pleased this funding will help them realize the potential of the area. I was pleased to support the proposal andI am excited to see the final results that will be made and the valuable local jobs that will be created.”

Specifically, the project will:

  • Convert parts of Main and Jefferson Streets into complete streets
  • Construct a linear multi-use path park
  • Develop a new waterfront community gathering area and new parking lots
  • Install new boat ramps and docking facilities for use by river cruise lines and recreational boaters.

These elements will improve multi-modal connections to the downtown/riverfront area and the Amtrak train depot. It will also connect the currently separate north and south segments of the Mississippi River Trail (MRT).
