Barnes, Hellige take top spots at Roth Relays

WASHINGTON - The Fort Madison Bloodhounds track and field team took 10th place out of 20 teams at the Steve Roth Washington Relays on Thursday night.

The Hounds got first-place Class B finishes from Elijah Barnes, Caleb Gehle, and HTC's Garrett Hannum and Matt Hellige. The Hounds 4x100.25 Weight Man's relay also captured first.

Senior Elijah Barnes captured first-place overall again in the shotput getting close to the 51-foot mark at 50'-10.75", a full foot ahead of the competition. Junior Alec Craft heaved the shot 37'-6". Caleb Gehle took first in the wheelchair shot with a throw of 16'-2.25".

HTC sophomore Matt Hellige, who's running for FMHS, captured first place in the Class B 3200-meter run and first overall with a time of 10:32.12. Junior Miquel Trejo took 6th in Class B with a time of 11:31.80. Hellige also took first in the Class B 1600-meter run at 4:56.14, which was good enough for 8th overall at the meet. Trejo was 9th in Class B with a time of 5:31.12.Barnes also through the discus 116'-2" good enough for 12th place overall. Senior Heath Hoenig whipped the disc 105'-9".

Garrett Hannum (HTC) captured 1st-place in the 800-meter run at 2:11.09. His time was 8th best overall at the meet. Dayne Cordray finished at 2:16:73.

In the long jump freshman Shay Smith leaped 15'-5.25" to finish in 17th place. Freshman Bryce Britton jumped 14'-9.5".

The boys 800-meter sprint medley team of Shay, Britton, Dominic Frantz and sophomore Matthew Meierotto took 5th place in the Class B division with a time of 1:50.20.

Senior Alex Gully took 3rd in Class B and tied for 10th overall in the 100-meter dash. Junior Trey Kuntz finished at 13.15 for 8th in Class B. Gehle took 1st in the 100-meter wheel chair at 32.65. Gully also took 3rd in Class B in the 200-meter dash at 24.82 with Quentin Schneider, another HTC runner for FMHS, was right behind in 4th at 24.99. Gehle took 1st in the 200-meter wheelchair run at 1:04.52

The boys distance medley team of Frantz, Smith, Meierotto and Hellige took 3rd place in Class B at 4:12.09.

Schneider is continuing his stellar year running the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.52 which was good enough for 2nd in Class B and 5th overall.

The 4x200-meter relay team of Smith, junior Harley Pennamon, freshman Calem Maclearn and Kuntz took 5th in Class B with a time of 1:48.91.

Senior Joseph Hummel finished in 6th in Class B in the 110-meter hurdles at 21.53.

The Hounds 4x100-meter relay team of Gully, Pennamon, Maclearn and Kuntz took 5th in their class with a time of :49.61. The 4x100.25 Weight Man's relay team of sophomores Danen Settles, Jarrett Settles, junior Alec Craft and senior Caleb Wood took first with a time of 56.86.

The 4x400-meter relay team of Hannum, Schneider, Cordray and Meierotto took 3rd in Class B with a mark of 3:51.67. That time was 7th best overall.

The Hounds finished 10th overall out of the meets 20 teams with 94 points. Wapello won the meet with 192 points.
