FORT MADISON - This last weekend was an epic and emotional performance for the Fort Madison High School Music Department.

Dinner Theater is held near the end of every school year, usually with a different theme each year. The theme this year was Around the World, including songs from the Beatles, Shakira, and Toto. Both of the Jazz Bands and the Show Choir also performed for their last time this season. Some of the seniors even sang their hearts out with their own solos.

This year's music department seniors were full of tears at Saturday night's performance. Most of them have been here all four years. Saying goodbye to something you've helped build must be a difficult thing, but some of them have given their thoughts on their senior year.

"I feel that my senior year went really well," said senior band/choir member Nakia Ross. "I got more involved in the music department and I am really gonna miss how much of a family we are. Everyone is so nice and accepting and it's really hard to leave that. I'm also gonna miss all of (Band Director Tracy) Madsen's stories. They never fail to make people laugh."

Seniors Alexis Powell (far left), Nakia Ross (middle left), Devin Beckert (middle right) and Kearston Johnson (far right) sing Thank You for the Music on stage with other seniors and choir alumni.

Devin Beckert, another choir/band senior said the friendships are what he'll miss the most.

"My senior year went a lot better than I thought it would. It went very fast and very smooth. The thing I will miss most about the music department is all the friendships and memories that I gained throughout my years here."

The music department at the high school has always been a huge part of not only the community, but also the student's lives. Some, like band senior Sara (Sally) Johnstun, may even call it family.

"Coming into high school, there was never really a time where I felt truly accepted, and it wasn't till marching band my freshman year that I felt I belonged. The atmosphere in the music department is really something special, and it honestly feels like we're one big family. You have your family members that you can't stand, but you love them anyway because they're family. That's what it feels like when you're a part of the music department," she said.

There are still a few more performances for the department, but Dinner Theater has been their final big performance. The students thank everyone in attendance at the show, it was more successful than they ever could have thought.

The choir students are dressed their best for the long time tradition of Promenade.
