FMHS grad named Adjunct professor at U of Iowa

Dr. Sara Stuefen, a 2003 graduate of FMHS, has been promoted by the University of Iowa College of Dentistry to Associate Clinical Adjunct Professor. She has been instructing senior dental students during their work with patients on a continual part time basis in the college's Department of Family Dentistry since earning her DDS Degree in 2010.

Of the several awards she received during her senior year and at graduation, the most distinctive was in recognition of her “high ethical and technical standards” and led to her

being recruited as an adjunct instructor. Dr. Stuefen has owned and operated a thriving family dentistry practice in Vinton, Iowa since 2010. She also actively serves on several committees in both the Iowa Dental Association and American Dental Association and is currently president of the IDA's University District.

In 2015, she was named “Iowa New Dentist of the Year” by the IDA. In 2017, she was honored with the prestigious title of Fellow, International College of Dentists in recognition of her “outstanding professional achievement, meritorious service and dedication to the continued progress of dentistry for the benefit of humankind.” She joins dentists from 122 countries worldwide who have been awarded the title of FICD.

Having participated in the “Iowa Mission of Mercy” for several years, she served as local chair when it was Cedar Rapids' turn to host the event in 2017. IMOM is an annual, two-day, volunteer-run dental clinic that provides free dental care to around one thousand patients.

In addition to her professional affiliations and activities, Dr. Stuefen has devoted considerable time to Vinton community service projects, mostly under the auspices of the Vinton Lions Club, where at present she is serving as the club's president. Dr. Stuefen is the daughter of Fred and Jan Bindewald of Fort Madison.
