FAIRFIELD - Kearstyn Johnson was the only Bloodhound to get a win in singles in Tuesday's girls high school tennis meet at Fairfield as the Hounds bowed out 2-7. However, FMHS was the first team to take any matches from Fairfield on the year.

Fairfield is 34-2 in total matches this year.

Fort Madison's top two seeds, Katie Larson and Miho Shirai, were both defeated 0-8 with Larson going to down to Fairfield's freshman phenom Yana Gaskell. Gaskell has yet to drop a game for the undefeated Trojans this year.

Shirai fell to Anatta Charoenkul who also is yet to lose a game this year.

"Their one and two spots are going to be tough for anyone to beat, so Katie and Miho had nothing to lose and just tried new things," Head Coach Amy Doherty said.

At No. 3 singles, Johnson dropped Hermela Gebremariam 8-6, who was unbeated playing at No. 4 all season.

"Kearstyn had a good match at number three, playing too carefully, yet consistently," Doherty said.

The Hounds No. 4 singles player Larissa Ferrill lost for the first time this year 5-8 to Anna Beasley. Senior Mercedee Doty fell 4-8 to Allison Krumboltz and at No. 6, Lanie Kuntz just missed knocking off senior Ashley Pool 6-8.

In doubles action, Doty and Kuntz nipped Krumboltz and Pool 9-8 with a 7-1 tiebreaker. Larson and Shirai fell 1-8 and Johnson/Ferrill lost 8-0.

"Lanie and Mercedee had an awesome comeback winning in a tiebreaker after being down 3-7. Our two wins were Fairfield’s first losses on the season so there’s a positive," Doherty said.

The Hounds travel to Burlington on Friday.

In junior varsity action, Alyse Schmidt won 6-0 and Zoe Ramatowski fell 1-6 in singles action. The two combined for a 6-2 win in doubles.

Lilli Scott and Lily Cadwallader won 6-4, Lauren Bailey/Deanna Warner won 6-4, Abbee Kelly/Taylor Ann McGee won 6-1, Aniah Ross/Kelsey Penrod fell 1-6, Shyanna Hoenig/Rachel Hellman won 6-3, and Jamie Folks/Kirklynn Nafziger won 6-1.
