KEOKUK - FMHS senior Taylor Shannan scored four goals to help the Lady Bloodhounds snap a 10-game losing streak to Keokuk on the road Tuesday night.
The Hounds went up 2-0 in the first 10 minutes of the game and held the Chiefs scoreless through the first half. Freshman Brandy Walker scored the second goal of the half after Shannan had staked FMHS to an early 1-0 lead.
"The first two goals happened in the first 10 minutes of the game, said head coach Sebastian Seifert. "We looked very strong, kept the ball in their half most of the first half. Their goal came off a quick counterattack."
Shannan scored her second goal right out of halftime and the Hounds kept pressuring the Chiefs even after junior goalkeeper Josie Pumphrey conceding three unanswered goals. But the Hounds offense returned fire and was able to keep feeding Shannan upfield bringing the Hounds out of a 3-4 deficit with two goals in the latter part of the second half.
"The whole team came together and played really well," Seifert said. "It's hard to single someone out as having been better than the others and even though the stats show Taylor Shannan scored four goals, she could not have done that without the team behind her feeding the balls to her. As a coach I am just really proud of our effort (Tuesday) night."
Pumphrey had eight saves on four goals in the game. Kaeli Hutson had two shots on goal and Dezire Kline had three. Shannan and Walker each had two.
On the season, Shannan has 18 goals on 22 shots on goal for an 81.8% efficiency in the box. Kline is second on the team in goals with 10. Sarah Bernhart leads the team in assists with six on the season followed by Kline and Shannan with five each. Pumphrey has 75 saves against 19 goals allowed doing the bulk of the work at the net, with Walker, just a freshman, spelling her on occasion.
The Hounds move to 5-3 in the Southeast Conference and are tied for second place with Keokuk. The Hounds lead the conference in goals scored with 26 and home goals with 15. They are 8-6 overall heading into a cross-town matchup with Holy Trinity Catholic at Baxter Sports Complex.
