FORT MADISON - Fort Madison residents supporting a return to full service for the local Amtrak station will meet next Tuesday, May 22nd, with a top Amtrak official and local leaders. The event will take place at the Old Fort Players Theater, 725 Ave G, Fort Madison, Iowa 52627 on Tuesday May 22nd, 2018 at 2PM.

“Having a strong rail connection is important to our local economy, said Jeff Kurtz, the meeting’s organizer and a former official with the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen (BLET). “Let’s work together to return to a fully staffed Amtrak office.”

Derrick James, Amtrak Senior Manager of Government Affairs, will attend the Tuesday meeting. James oversees operations for the 13 state Amtrak North Central America Region.

State Senator Rich Taylor, State Representative Jerry Kearns, and Congressman Dave Loebsack’s office area staffer Jared Hershberger and other local leaders will also attend the meeting.

Kurtz, a candidate for the Iowa Legislature, pointed out that Fort Madison’s rail service is an economic advantage worth fighting for.

“I hope our community can successfully negotiate with Mr. James to restore the status of the Fort Madison depot and reinstate Amtrak Depot Senior Agent Amy Lambert,” said Kurtz.
