Milestones giving seniors vouchers for Farmer's Markets

DAVENPORT - As part of a national initiative, Milestones Area Agency on Aging will begin distributing vouchers starting June 1 to low- and moderate-income seniors for use at approved local farmers markets.

All eligible Iowans must be age 60 on the day vouchers are picked up and meet the income guidelines. Milestones is the distribution agency for seniors living in Appanoose, Clinton, Davis, Des Moines, Henry, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lee, Louisa, Lucas, Mahaska, Monroe, Muscatine, Scott, Van Buren, Wapello and Wayne counties.

Annual income requirements are $22,459 or below for a single person and $30,451 or below for a married couple. Both spouses may receive checks. Recipients must sign a statement of eligibility that includes their name, address, phone number and the last four digits of their Social Security number.

Recipients are awarded 10-$3 checks valued at $30. The checks can be used June through October for fresh, unprepared, locally grown fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and honey at participating farmers market vendors. Checks cannot be used for baked goods, eggs, jelly, meat, etc.

Vouchers can be picked up June 4 and 8 at the Steamboat Senior Center, 501 Jefferson St., Burlington from 1:00 – 3:00; Autumn Heights Nutrition Center, 2830 Winegard Dr., Burlington on June 5, 7, 12 and 14 between 9:15 and 10:15 a.m. Distribution will also be available at the Milestones office, 509 Jefferson St., Burlington between 1:00 and 3:00 pm Monday thru Friday starting June 11 and continuing throughout the month until the vouchers are gone.
