In a show of community support, local members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints have planned a “Mormon Helping Hands” service day for Saturday, June 2rd. Inviting fellow Mormons from surrounding areas to join them, local organizers expect 200+ members to assist the city and local agencies in 15+ different service projects around the Fort Madison community.

Projects include painting the shelter in Shopton Park, painting the pavilion in Riverview Park, sprucing up the Old Fort in Riverview Park, repairing and painting benches in Central Park, cleaning up trash at various city parks, painting city fire hydrants and assisting at the PAWS animal shelter, just to name a few. In addition, an indoor sewing project will be conducted at the LDS church building located at 2193 Old Denmark Road in Fort Madison.

“We are looking forward to this opportunity to thank the city of Fort Madison for its support over the years and we are very grateful to city officials and nonprofit partners for helping us put together this morning of service,” explainedWes Mogenhan, local leader of the LDS branch (congregation) in Fort Madison. “We want to show our appreciation for those who do so much to make Fort Madison such a great place to live,” he added.

Volunteers are selecting their projects by registering on a new website called www.JustServe.org before they meet early on Saturday morning to receive final instructions. JustServe.org is a free volunteer website available to nonprofits and volunteers to post or find local service opportunities. Organizers encourage local agencies to visit the site to learn more.
