Hounds drop two on weekend swing to Quad Cities

DAVENPORT – Fort Madison lost two games on Saturday as part of a day trip to an invitational at Davenport West.

The first game of the day, the Hounds went up against 3-11 Davenport North, who faces some stiff competition out of the Quad Cities and plays all freshmen and sophomores.

The Hounds won home team designation in both Saturday games and, with Cassie Powers pitching, the Hounds jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a two-out RBI single by senior Kamryn Bailey, driving in Sadie Smithburg who singled with one-out and advanced to second on a passed ball.

Neither team put up any runs in the second, but North’s Hannah Healey reached on an error to lead off the top of the third. Ivy Wilmington sacrificed Healey to second and Jordan Burch drove her in on a fielder’s choice out at first. Powers got the next hitter to ground out to end the inning.

FMHS responded in the bottom of third. Kylie Cashman drew a lead-off walk and Smithburg singled and advanced to the second on the throw to third to try and catch Cashman who was safe. Olivia Williams flew out to right for the first out. Bailey grounded out to short, but Cashman went on the throw and scored to give the Hounds a 2-1 lead. Powers also grounded out to short to end the inning.

North’s Molly Freeman and Powers both went unscathed in the fourth and fifth, but Davenport put up a three spot in the top of the 6th. North’s Kyleigh Coin opened the top of the inning with a single. Powers got the next hitter to ground back to her for an out, but Coin moved to second.  Morgan Newmeyer drew a walk and Rileigh Antle singled to score Coin. Newmeyer and Antle would both come around to score.

In the bottom of the sixth Teryn Parsons reached on an error at second. Logan Johnson popped out to second. Vanessa Golowach singled moving Parson to third, but Allison Helmick struck out for the second out. Smithburg drew a walk to put the game-winning run at the plate in Olivia Williams who flew out to right to end the game under the hour and half time limit.

in the second game, Muscatine’s Kaitlyn Bierman threw a five-hit 9-0 shutout over the Hounds. Smithburg had two hits for the Hounds. Williams, Bailey, and Parsons had the other hits for Fort Madison. Katelyn Dennis went the distance for the Hounds in the loss. She gave up nine runs on 12 hits and three strikeouts.
