Shirley Hulboy, 82, of Keokuk, IA, died at River Hills Village in Keokuk on Tuesday, June 19, 2018.

Shirley was born in Chicago, IL, on July 23, 1935 to Leonard and Elizabeth Truax. She attended nursing school at Presbyterian Hospital (now Rush-St. Luke’s) in Chicago. Upon graduating, she struck out across the country, visiting the western states and Canada on her way to San Francisco, CA, for a

nursing job at University of California Hospitals in Berkeley. There she met her future husband, Joseph Hulboy, and they were married in 1958. They later had two daughters. He preceded her in death on September 12, 2000.

Shirley loved music and had a beautiful contralto voice. She lived in many of the U.S. states over the course of her lifetime, and always enjoyed going to new places and meeting new people. Her sense of adventure and fun led her to visit numerous locations overseas, including Egypt, South Africa, Europe, Panama, and the Galapagos Islands. She was passionate about the environment and protecting this beautiful planet that God has given us.

Other than her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Shirley loved people most of all. She was a wonderful nurse, caring and compassionate. Even after she retired, she continued to care for the sick and homebound, both informally and through volunteer activities such as the Red Cross, Meals on Wheels, and the welcome desk at Keokuk Area Hospital. She had a gift for making everyone feel special and loved. Her warm smile and friendly, cheerful nature endeared her to everyone she met.

Shirley is survived by her daughters, Laura (John) Vance of Keokuk, and Diana Hulboy (Liz Feeney) of Philadelphia; her brother Lee (Marina) Truax of Farmington, NM; her grandchildren, Douglas (Sierra) Reed and Samantha Reed, both of Ft. Madison, IA; her great-granddaughter, Kynleigh Reed; her nephew, Scott (Arlene) Truax of Cary, NC; her niece, Elizabeth (John) Benz of Farmington, NM; her best friend since age 5, Sally Speredes, of Chicago; a loving church family; and many, many friends who were drawn to her warmth and love.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Vigen Memorial Home in Keokuk with Pastors Ken Barlow and Adam Johnson officiating.

Visitation will be held after 1 p.m. Sunday with the family meeting with friends from 2 – 4 p.m.

Burial will be in the Keokuk National Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Bethany Baptist Church or The Nature Conservancy.
