KEOKUK - Area law enforcement and first responders will be going spatula to spatula tonight at Hy-Vee in Keokuk.

Beginning with grills firing up at 6 p.m., the Lee County EMS, Keokuk Fire Department, Keokuk Police Department and Lee County Sheriff's Department will be battling it out for the rights (and a two-and-half foot traveling trophy) to the best burger.

The cook-off is a charitable function set up through Hy-Vee where the winner of the best burger will win a picnic for 20 for the winning group's favorite charity provided by Hy-Vee at a date to be determined.

Lee County Sheriff Stacy Weber, who bought the trophy said the grilling mitts are off. The sheriff's department is competing for Raisin' Em Up childcare in Donnellson. Weber said the childcare's director Sarah Tweedy works more hours than he does and would like to give them a day off from cooking.

"They have about 60 children there, so I said I would make up the difference for the cookout. That girls works more hours than I do and we'd like to do this for her.

"There's been a lot of smack talking going on from other departments. One would think a fire department could bring some heat, but they're in for a surprise."

Each group will get two pounds of ground beef to create their burger. The burgers will be graded on taste, creativity and appearance by three fair and impartial judges that Weber said "we can get to",

The burgers will be for judging, but the public is invited to attend and Hy-Vee will have special pricing on hot dogs and chips for a $1.50 for anyone coming to watch the

Keokuk Fire Department will be grilling for the South Lee County Relay for Life and some of the other charities have yet to be determined.,
