WEST POINT - West Point resident Dennis McGregor has been selected from a pool of more than a dozen candidates as the West Point City Council's choice for the city's next administrator.

However, the West Point Utility Board still has to vote on the position as well. The West Point City Administrator serves double duty as the city's top paid official and the utilities director. West Point Mayor Paul Walker said the hiring wouldn't become official until the utility voted on the issue Tuesday.

"I don't foresee there being any problems," Walker said. "But if something were to come up, we'd just go back to square one."

McGregor wasn't in attendance at the meeting as he was in Canada for his current employer. Walker said the timeline would be about a month, if approved by the utility board, for McGregor to tie up some pending commitments with his current employer, before taking the position with the city.

Current West Point City Administrator Gary Menke, who also wasn't in attendance to do other commitments, announced his resignation at the June 12 regular meeting. Menke has served in the position for the past eight years.

Walker said the pool of candidates was whittled down from 13 to eight with four from West Point. He said the Policy and Administration committee met and took the four from West Point and the four other most qualified and then scheduled two days of interviews with several members of the committee, Walker, and Menke. That group narrowed the pool to three and then the full board sat again to pick one of the final three.

In other action, the council:

• voted 4-0 to approve a car show on Aug. 25 on the town square. Councilman Will Stuekerjuergen abstained.

• voted 5-0 to approve liquor licenses for Phil's Pub for outdoor service expiring on July 23, 2018, and for the Sweet Corn Festival extended service area for four area establishments.

• changed the time of the next city council meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. to accommodate clean up for the Sweet Corn Festival on Aug. 13.
