Authorities looking into stabbing incident

FORT MADISON - Fort Madison police and first responders were called to the Burlington Northern Santa Fe bridge on Monday night on a report of a stabbing.

Authorities were notified at approximately 10:15 p.m. Monday that a vehicle was coming across the bridge from Hancock County in Illinois carrying a passenger who had allegedly been stabbed above the abdomen. The driver of the private vehicle may have also sustained injuries.

Lee County EMS, Fort Madison Fire & Rescue and police responded to the foot of the bridge where the victim, who's name has not been released, and the driver were taken to Fort Madison Community Hospital.

Fort Madison Police Chief Tim Sittig said local police notified the Hancock County Sheriff's Department and a deputy was sent to take over the investigation.

No information on the incident, the extent of the injuries or the circumstances were available from the Hancock County Sheriff's Department this morning and Sheriff Scott Bentzinger was unavailable for comment.
