DONNELLSON – The Lee County Fair kicked off Wednesday with the traditional crowning of the Fair Royal Court and 17-year-old Summer Smith is wearing the top crown.

Smith is the daughter of Dave and Jamey Sue Smith of Donnellson and attends Central Lee High School where she’ll be a senior in the fall.

Smith, who was also awarded Miss Congeniality, said when she didn’t hear her name for one of the runner-up spots, she thought she was out of it.

“Honestly, I felt when I didn’t get first or second runner up that I wasn’t going to get it, but when they said my name I was just shocked,” she said.

She said the biggest lesson she learned was that you should never give up. She said she thought she performed poorly in the interview part of the judging, but kept pressing through.

Smith will now represent Lee County at the Iowa State Fair and in the Iowa State Fair Queen contest and said she hasn’t really processed how busy she’s going to be in the next year.

“Well, it’s obviously going to be really busy going to the state fair,” she said. “I’m going to be there for two weeks. I’m excited to get to do all those new experiences and also to represent my county at the state level.”

Holy Trinity Senior Madison Mohrfeld was first runner-up followed by Central Lee’s Brooklyn Pardall as second runner-up.

Maren Doty was named the Lee County Fair Junior Queen. Julie Fraise and Memphis Anderson were named Lil Mr. and Ms. Lee County Fair.

Cole Moeller and Mohrfeld were honored with the Brownfield Agriculture Youth Awards.
