Waugh drives in seven to end Hounds' season

FAIRFIELD - The Fairfield Trojans completed a five-game sweep of the Bloodhounds on the year with a 12-0 win in Class 3A District baseball action on Saturday

The Trojans' Jackson Wheaton went the distance in the five-inning affair, allowing just one hit to Hound sophomore Jace Burgher, while striking out eight on just one walk. Wheaton allowed only two Hounds to get on base giving up a walk to junior Jordyn Gerdes.

Fort Madison's junior Dayne Cordray started on the mound for the Hounds, Cordray went two innings giving up seven runs on five hits and striking out three. Gerdes came on in relief and went an inning and a third giving up five more runs, four earned, on five hits against three walks and two strikeouts. Brandon Reichelt threw two pitches in the bottom of the fourth for two outs.

The Trojans' Tristan Waugh went 2-for-2 with two home runs, including a grand slam, to finish with seven RBIs on the night. Jimmy Kurka and Hunter Hoskins also went 2-for-2. Hoskins homered in one of his at-bats and finished with three RBI.

The game was originally scheduled for Friday, but inclement weather postponed the game until Saturday,

Fort Madison finished the year 5-20. Fairfield improves to 29-8 and takes on Iowa City Liberty tonight in substate action. Liberty, who was just 10-21 on the year going into the game, knocked off the 21-11 Demons, 3-1.

On the year, Cordray led all Hounds with more than 30 plate appearances, hitting 369. Gerdes was the only other Hound to hit better than .300 on the year at a .324 clip with a team leading 14 RBI. Reichelt was third on the team in hitting at .279 and led the Hounds in homers with three and doubles with six. Burgher went a perfect 12-12 in stolen bases. Cordray was second going 6-of-8 on the season.

All five of the Hounds wins were split between five different pitchers with Cordray, Reichelt, Gerdes, Burgher and Lennon Barker all getting a win over the season. Reichelt led the team in ERA with 4.59. Cordray led the team in innings pitched with 35 and strikeouts with 31 on the year. Gerdes led the Hounds with two saves.
